Hey, What’s Going On?

It’s been quite a while since we’ve posted updates to this site. Like most people, “life” has happened, which has caused us to focus on higher priority items for us. The good news is we’re working on a process to get updates for the site more regularly!

Is Your Retro Gaming Authentic Enough?

play choice 3 avatarRecently we’ve really gotten into watching Twitch and YouTube gaming streams.  There is something strangely alluring to watch others play games, but what is extremely disappointing are those retro streamers who stream using emulators.  Come on man!  Use some real hardware!

Over the past 6 or 7 years we’ve streamed a variety of different gaming content, but never took it serious.  Well, one night Tanya and I made the decision that we’ll throw up a channel and start streaming authentic retro gaming.  No emulators, no hacked roms, just 100% retro games on authentic hardware using real cartridges and discs.  Sounds cool huh?

We will post the videos and reviews of Flicky, Primal Rage, Rolling Thunder 2, Super Ghouls N Ghosts and Shanghai 2 later this week. We’ll also knock out a few more reviews before I travel later this week. I’ll be hitting up a thrift store that I’ve had great luck with in the past and hope to find many new games.

Personal Gaming Finds:

This week I finally received that copy of Magical Drop 2 for Super Famicom. Its near perfect to the Neo Geo version except there are a few sound changes and the “clown” that you normally control through the game appears to be gone. I’m not sure if there is a different arcade mode that I’m missing within the game but it appears to force you to use one of the characters from the story mode.

I also through out a best offer for Super Famicom version of Fatal Fury Special. This was from a routine seller that I’ve always had a great experience with it so I expect the game to arrive not only soon but in great shape.

Twitter Shout-Outs

@ausretrogamer posted a photo of Wizard of Wor which has some of the most awesome box art ever.

Personal Gaming Finds:

I have (had) a Super Bowl Sunday tradition where I would visit the Broad Acres Swapmeet here in town. This is a huge open-air swapmeet that had yielded some of the best retro video games in previous years, however the last three trips have yielded squat. And what’s worst, the last couple times I’ve even gone to this swapmeet it seems the video games have remained unchanged. Its the same overpriced, piss-poor labeled games that money could be wasted on. Thus, I will end the tradition – I might actually stop going all together. Who knows.

Two weeks ago I mentioned that I ordered a copy of Magical Drop II for Super Famicom. It’s coming from Japan and still hasn’t arrived. However, I did purchase the Super Famicom versions of Street Fighter II, and one of the Dragon Ball fighting games.

Twitter Shout-Outs

Normally I’d highlight a couple cool tweets each week, but this has been a busy week, so I’m only sharing one:

@Astreigha has launched a Facebook page with some of her cool perler bead gaming art. Check her out and follow:

This week we have a handful of price updates, some weirdness surrounding Stadium Events and more Twitter shout-outs:

Video game price updates:

For more NES prices click here: Nintendo NES Price Guide:

Gauntlet (Tengen Licensed/Unlicensed) ….. $6
Ikari Warriors ….. $5
Iron Tank ….. $5
Kabuki: Quantum Fighter ….. $7
Karate Champ ….. $3
Renegade ….. $5
Spelunker ….. $7
*Stadium Events ….. $35100

A sealed Stadium Events sold this week on eBay for $35,100. It’s always great to see some rare games come out of hiding, and this one was plagued with fake bids driving the game up to over $100,000. Eventually the game settled at the $35k mark. More interesting than the Stadium Events story itself, is how some elements of the media portrayed it – checkout: Stadium Event Weirdness.

I mentioned last week that I ordered a copy of Magical Drop 2 for Super Famicom from Japan. It still hasn’t arrived yet.

This has been a light week for updates, but we have a few:

Video game price updates:

For more NES prices click here: Nintendo NES Price Guide:

California Games ….. $3
Commando ….. $5
Guerrilla War ….. $5
Heavy Barrel ….. $7
Paperboy ….. $7
Spy Hunter ….. $5

Personal Gaming Finds:

This week I received a copy of Commando for Atari 7800. Its in great shape but haven’t had a chance yet to bust out the 7800 to play it. I’ve heard its a great port, and if YouTube is any indication of its quality I think I’m going to be pleasantly surprised.

I also ordered a copy of Magical Drop 2 for Super Famicom. This is a Neo-Geo port of the same name. Its coming from Japan so we might not see it until the middle of February. We will have a series of Super Famicom games and pricing soon.

Last but not lease I received a copy of Thunder and Lightning for NES. It was a Buy-it-now on eBay and I felt it was a fair price. A few hours later I received a PayPal refund and was thinking “oh crap there is something wrong with the item”. Come to find out it was a partial refund from Hillbillymedia (who I purchased T&L from). There was a note indicating that he was planning to reduce the price later that day and although he appreciated me purchasing the game he couldn’t charge me the full price and refunded me the difference. Awesome! On a side note Hillbillymedia’s game prices are very much inline with what we report here.

Elevator Action ….. $6
Galaga ….. $11
RoadBlasters ….. $5

We also obtained an ElGato capture device which will be using to providing gameplay of other more modern consoles.  Our initial impressions of the device were poor, but it was more of a lackluster computer, rather than the device that caused us grief.
